Systems Engineering

Project Summary

The basic principles of systems engineering such as capability based engineering and value-driven design, are used to look at an aircraft as part of a larger system.

Capability engineering incorporates people, process, and material, ensuring that capabilities are properly designed, efficiently developed and sustained. Following capability-based planning methods and using systems engineering tools that support functional analysis and allocation, requirements management, network analysis, and physical design, a structured analytical approach to capability requirements definition for capability portfolios, can be obtained.

Value-driven design (VDD) is a strategy based on microeconomics.  This strategy is to make design choices that will maximize the system value rather than to meet the performance requirements.  This can make VDD controversial as performance criteria are a critical element of systems engineering.  However it is argued that VDD can reduce cost overruns.  VDD encourages design optimization by providing an objective function and eliminating constraints.  In order to build a value model, VDD employs economic analysis.  The value model is usually expressed in terms of profit for a business.

When designing a system, the performance requirements are taken and a system value model is made using these requirements as inputs.  The conceptual design is optimized in order to maximize the output of the value model.  An objective function for each component of the system can be derived from the system value model using sensitivity analysis.
