Technology Infusion

Project Summary

This is carried out in the preliminary conceptual design phase and involves looking at the readiness level of a technology and using this to assess how that technology will work within a system before the time and expense is put into building the system.

The technology readiness level (TRL) is a measure that can be used to assess the maturity of evolving technologies prior to incorporating that technology into a system.  A new technology will need to be tested and refined so would not be ready for immediate application.  Once tested and sufficiently proven the technology can then be incorporated in a system. A technology which its basic principles have been observed and reported is given the lowest level of technology readiness, ‘1’.  On the other end of the scale an actual system which has been proven through different mission operations is given the highest level or readiness, ‘9’.  If the TRL is too low then delays and extra costs could be incurred.
