Visual Analytics

Project Summary

Visual analytics is the science of analytical reasoning facilitated by visual interactive interfaces.  It is an outgrowth of the field’s information visualization and scientific visualization that focuses on analytical reasoning and is especially concerned with sense making and reasoning.  Using a visual way of displaying information coupled with analytical reasoning that will bring together several scientific and technical communities in order to enhance the decision making process.  It is a contemporary approach of combining human intuition and the science of mathematical deduction to directly perceive patterns and derive knowledge and insight from them.

The science of analytical reasoning provides a framework for which both strategic and tactical visual technologies for threat analysis, prevention, and response can be based on.  Analytical reasoning is vital to the task of applying human-judgment to reach conclusions from a combination of evidence and assumptions.

The main focus areas of visual analytics include:

  • Analytical reasoning techniques
  • Data representations and transformations
  • Techniques to support production, presentation and distribution of the results, to communicate information in an appropriate context to a variety of audiences
  • Visual representations and interaction techniques
